Forecast: Political worth $400 million more.
Borrell Associates says this mid-term election year is pacing toward seeing $4.2 billion in campaign spending. That’s $400 million more than its previous forecast, in part due to last month’s Supreme Court ruling making it easier for corporations to support specific candidates. Storms drive ad demand.
It’s no secret that winter weather pays ratings and revenue dividends for news stations. Stations report they sold out with storm-related advertising piling up along with the flakes. With online metrics, stations are already reporting large increases in website traffic.
Chrysler adds in-car Wi-Fi.
Terrestrial radio may still be the king of the road, but the in-car list of options continues to grow. Chrysler announces the 2010 Connected Dodge Caravan will offer internet, live television and online gaming join radio as in-car “infotainment” options. Spanish Broadcasting System turns to radio for its newest television manager. Miami radio general sales manager Albert Rodriguez has been promoted to general manager of “Mega TV” WSBS-TV, Miami. CEO Raul Alarcon says he’ll be the “perfect liaison” between the radio and TV divisions.
Pamal drops talk for oldies.
The talk/sports format on WROW, Albany, NY (590) came to an end today, as Pamal flipped the station to a simulcast of oldies “Magic” WKLI-FM (100.9). The changes have just begun. A new format on WKLI-FM will come later this month. MORE
Analysts predict Stern will stay put
There’s a growing consensus Sirius XM Radio CEO Mel Karmazin will be able to work out a deal keeping Howard Stern on satellite radio. On Wall Street, analysts predict the deal will give Stern a smaller paycheck.
Is free Sirius XM possible?
Satellite radio has been built into nearly 27 million cars and by 2015 that number could top 70 million. One analyst says that could position Sirius XM Radio to offer a free ad-supported service to the missions who have a receiver but aren’t subscribing.
Cruel call proves costly.
The “prank” call told a listener her husband was dead in a motorcycle wreck. Mean spirited? Perhaps, but that’s not what gets a Spanish Broadcasting System morning show fined. MORE
Augusta station hit with phone fine.
The FCC it received “multiple complaints” that Black gospel/talk WAAW (94.7) personality Bryan Doyle called city and airport officials in March 2006 and put his conversations with three different people on the air without informing them the calls were being recorded for broadcast. MORE
